SEO glossary

Anchor Text

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink.

In plain English

It gives both users and search engines context about the linked page. A natural profile mixes branded, exact-match, partial-match, naked-URL, and generic ('click here') anchors. Internal anchors are something you fully control, so use descriptive, keyword-relevant text there; external anchors you earn, and a spike of identical exact-match anchors at scale looks manipulative to Google.

Why it matters for SEO

Anchor text shapes what a page ranks for, but aggressive exact-match anchors are a classic over-optimization signal that can trigger a manual or algorithmic penalty.
